Part One – How to Hide Your File/Folder Wisely

The security of files (data) and privacy is a topic that people have been paying attention to for a long time, especially those who need to share the same computer with others. How can you hide and protect your personal data on a local computer without being viewed and modified by others? Here are some simple and effective ways to hide and protect files (data).

The basic way to hide file/folder: modify the properties of file/folder

1)      Hide your file/folder

A.      Right click the file/folder, then select properties

B.      Check “Hidden”

C.      After tapping “OK”, your file will be hidden by your system

2)      View your hidden file/folder(Here we take Windows 10 as example)

A.      Open arbitrary folder

B.      Click “View”-“Option

C.      Then click “View”, check “ Show hidden files, folders, and drives” 

D.      After tapping “OK”, your file will be shown by your system

E.       You could simply hide it again by checking “Don’t show hidden files, folders or drivers”

3)      Unhide your file/folder

A.      Use the step “2)” to show your hidden file/folder

B.      Right click the file/folder, then select properties

C.      Uncheck “Hidden”

D.      After tapping “OK”, your file will be displayed by your system

The intermediate way to hide file/folder: Based on hidden attribute we can add file system attribute to enhance the hiding effect

Open Command Prompt, then type “Attrib +a +h +s +r D:\test” to change the properties of folder to implement the hiding effect.

Note: Replace the “D:\test” with the absolute address of the folder you need to hide

You could simply type “Attrib -a -h -s -r d:\test” to unhide the folder

The downside of this method is that you could unhide the folder by unchecking “Hide protected operating system files” & checking “Show hidden files, folders, and drives”.
