Reset Forgotten Windows Administrator Password

Image
Tons of Windows software exists to help you reset passwords. One option is the same tool that we detailed in the Linux method above. It gets the job done quickly, so let’s discuss how to use it without Linux. Of course, if you can’t get into your own PC, you’ll have to download the software on a different computer. Boot Into the Offline Password Editor Head to the download page and look for the Downloads header. Under it, you’ll see a file with Bootable CD image next to it — named cd140201.zip at the time of writing. Download the ZIP to your desktop or other convenient location and use a file extraction tool to get to the ISO inside. You’ll need to burn this ISO file to a USB drive (or CD if you want) using a free program like Rufus. After it’s done, insert the drive into your PC and reboot. Look for the key to choose a boot device (like F12) if it doesn’t boot to the USB automatically. Once the tool loads, you’ll see a boot: line at the bottom of the terminal output.

Why Is My Browser Storing So Much Private Data?

Between the browser history and tracking cookies, it’s easy to feel like your browser is tracking and spying on you. But web browsers store this private data for good reasons. We have shown you how to have your browser clear private data whenever it closes or always start in private-browsing mode. However, having your browser keep all this private data can be very useful. Browser Cache The browser cache is a place where your browser stores bits and pieces of downloaded websites – images, scripts, CSS style sheets, and more. When you access a web page that uses the data in the future, your browser can load it from the cache. This saves bandwidth and speeds up page load times. For example, your browser has probably cached the How-To Geek logo at the top of this page. When you visit another page on our website or come back to our homepage tomorrow, your browser will load the How-To Geek logo from its browser cache, speeding things up and saving download bandwidth. Good Uses and Bad Uses for Cookies

Cookies have a number of very important uses. The web wouldn’t be what it is without them today. Cookies store your login state. Without them, you wouldn’t be able to log into websites. Websites use cookies to remember and identify you. Cookies store preferences on websites. You couldn’t change settings and have them persist between page loads without cookies. For example, if you’re shopping on Amazon, Amazon can remember the products you’ve browsed and recommend similar products – even if you’re not logged in. However, cookies can also be used for more questionable purposes. Advertising and tracking networks use tracking cookies to track you across the web. 5 Windows Files and Folders You Can Delete to Save Space

Windows contains plenty of files and folders that you don’t really need. From hidden caches and old files that you can remove to clear space to files you can actually delete to solve problems, knowing what’s safe to remove can be challenging. Let’s step through some Windows files and folders that are totally safe to remove, and why you might want to do so. Note that some of these folders are in protected locations, so take care when deleting them. 1. The Hibernation File Located at C:\hiberfil.sys Hibernation mode on your PC is like sleep mode, but the system saves all your open work to the hard drive and then shuts down. You can remove the battery from your laptop and stay in hibernation for a week, then start back up and be right where you left off. Of course, this takes up space, which is what the hibernation file is for. Depending on your hard drive size, the hibernation file is likely several gigabytes or more. If you don’t use hibernation and want to disable it, you ca

How to Disable Ads in Windows 10 File Explorer

Windows 10 has gotten a lot right, but it’s far from perfect. One of the most annoying parts of this version is that Microsoft has crammed ads into many places that were once clean. From “Recommended” junk in your Start Menu to ad-infested versions of the classic Solitaire and Minesweeper games, it seems that you can’t get away. Recently, many users have started to see ads show in up the File Explorer. While they’re at least advertising for Office 365 and other Microsoft products instead of inappropriate content, nobody wants to see more ads shoved into their daily workflow. Thankfully, these are easy to disable. Open your Start Menu and type File Explorer Options , then click that entry to open the File Explorer’s Settings panel. Select the View tab, then scroll through the Advanced Options box to find Show sync provider notifications . Turn this option off, and you won’t see those annoying ads anymore. This doesn’t seem linked to the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Updat

How Disk Defragmentation Works

This operation not only helps put file pieces back together, but can also consolidate free space so that there are larger blocks of space available to write new files thus preventing further fragmentation. A good defragmenter will also include an algorithm for smart file placement that utilizes the knowledge of faster and slower data access zones on the hard drive. Let’s take a closer look at these aspects of disk defragmentation. File Defragmentation   In simple terms, file defragmentation is the process of putting file pieces back together. What disk defragmenters do is re-write files into contiguous blocks of free space making sure that all file fragments are written in a consecutive order. This way the hard drive's read-write head has to go to one location to access the requested file instead of having to gather file pieces all over the drive. Free Space Defragmentation   Defragmentation, or consolidation, of the free space on a hard drive is one of the most effectiv

Frozen program? Here’s how to force it to quit

Raise your hand if you hate the spinning beach ball! Yep, I’m talking about all those times when your computer mouse turns into a spinning blue disc (on a Windows PC) or a multicolored beach ball (on a Mac), just as the program on your desktop comes to a screeching halt. That usually means something (hopefully minor) is amiss on your system. Maybe your computer is running low on memory because it’s doing a few too many things at once; or, perhaps, the program you’re using has wandered into a corner that it can’t get itself out of. Now, the best way to deal with either the spinning Windows disc or the Mac’s beach ball is, typically, to do nothing. With any luck, your system or application will settle down after a few seconds or so. But if several minutes have passed and you’re still staring at a frozen program, it might be time to take matters into your own hands and force the stalled program to quit. Doing so may, of course, lead to losing any unsaved data; then a
