32-bit and 64-bit Windows Differences

We’ve discussed all the differences between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, but we’ll review the points briefly here. Whether your copy of Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit depends on your processor (CPU). Like Windows, modern processors are either 32-bit or 64-bit. 64-bit machines can process much more information at once, making them more powerful. If you have a 32-bit processor, you must also install the 32-bit Windows. While a 64-bit processor is compatible with 32-bit versions of Windows, you’ll have to run 64-bit Windows to take full advantage of the CPU’s benefits. To see what your copy of Windows and your processor are on Windows 10 , open the Start Menu and type About to open the About your PC menu. Here, under System type , you’ll see if Windows and your processor are 32-bit or 64-bit. To check this on older versions of Windows, type System into the Start Menu to open the System Control Panel entry. Under System type , Windows will tell you if your system is 32-bit or 64-b

How to Make UAC Less Annoying

Image
User Account Control (UAC) was first introduced in Windows Vista and has been present in the OS since. It allows you to grant administrative rights on a selective basis, so you don’t have to stay logged into an unsafe admin account all the time. UAC was infamous for pestering you every five seconds in Vista, but you can tone it down in newer Windows versions, too. First, pay a visit to the UAC menu (when logged in as an admin). Type uac into the Start Menu and choose Change User Account Control Settings . You’re able to choose from four levels of alert here. The most secure, like the Vista default, will always notify you when you try to make changes to Windows settings (such as changing the time or editing Windows Firewall options). The default level, one below the top, doesn’t notify on Windows settings changes, but will ask for permission to install software. The third level of security is the same as the second, but doesn’t dim your desktop for the UAC prompt. This

8 CMD Commands to Manage (Wireless) Networks in Windows

Image
As a Windows user, the Control Panel and the Settings app can feel quite limiting in what they can do. If you want full and absolute control over your network, meaning access to everything the operating system has to offer, then you’ll have to start using Command Prompt. Never used Command Prompt before? Don’t worry. Using it is as simple as typing out the commands you’ll see below. It’s not hard at all and we’ll tell you everything you need to know to get started. But if you’re still unsure, check out our beginner’s guide to Command Prompt. If you’re ready to continue, here are some of the most useful commands to know for managing and troubleshooting your home network. 1. PING ping is one of the most basic yet useful commands you could know. It tells you whether your computer can reach some destination IP address or domain name, and if it can, how long it takes data to travel there and back again. Sample usage and output: The command works by sending out mult

PIN or Password? Which Option Should I Choose?

Protecting an account, like most security matters, comes down to a trade-off between convenience and security. A PIN of 1234 is super convenient, but completely insecure. Likewise, a 100-digit PIN won’t be cracked for years, but it’s a bit inconvenient to enter. When used correctly, however, a solid PIN is a great compromise between the two values. PINs Are Local It’s important to note that when you set a PIN in Windows 10, it applies only to that device. Thus, if you set a PIN on your home PC and someone were to steal it, they couldn’t access your account unless they had physical access to your device. In addition, your PIN can’t sign into any of your Microsoft accounts like your password can. Thus, using your Microsoft password to sign into your PC is more of a risk. If you have to type that password to log in every time, it might tempt you to make it simpler and weaker. Should someone steal your password, they could also log into your Outlook email, your Xbox accou

How to Move a Window Pixel-by-Pixel in Windows 10

Image
Have you ever had a window move off the screen so that the title bar disappears and you can’t move it back? Sometimes this problem fixes itself, but sometimes it doesn’t — even after rebooting! The quick answer is this: select the window and press Alt + Space to bring up the window’s menu. Select Move and your cursor will change to one that indicates that you can now drag the window however you want. If you want precision control of how the window moves, you can use the Arrow keys instead of dragging with the mouse. This is a much better option when you just want to scoot the window over by a little bit. But it turns out that this method doesn’t actually move the window one pixel at a time, so sometimes it’s impossible to line everything up exactly the way you want it. So what can you do? The quick answer is this: hold down the Ctrl key while using the Arrow keys . It’s as simple as that. This makes it so that the window literally moves one pixel in the given direction ev

How to schedule your computer to shut down

Do you always forget to turn off your computer before going to bed, or just want the computer to automatically shut down after some tasks are completed? Using shutdown command is not convenient enough and not everyone knows how to use the command. There is a practical and simple program can easily manage the shutdown task. It is Wise Auto Shutdown.  It can not only let the computer shut down at a certain time, but also let your computer restart, log off, sleep or power off at a certain time. Daily task is suitable for people who have the same needs every day. But I think it is also necessary to add a weekly task function. Another option is on idle. What is on idle? The user is considered absent if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. Detecting the Idle State

A task can be handled in several ways when the computer enters an idle state. This includes defining an idle trigger or setting the idle conditions for when the task starts. Detecting the Idle State In Windows 7, the Task Scheduler verifies that the computer is in an idle state every 15 minutes. Task Scheduler checks for an idle state using two criteria: user absence, and a lack of resource consumption. The user is considered absent if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the last detection interval. (An exception would be for any presentation type application that sets the ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED flag. This flag forces Task Schedule to not consider the system as being idle, regardless of user activity or resource consumption.) In Windows 7, Task Scheduler considers a processor as idle even when low priority threads (thread priority < normal

How to Improve Wallpaper Quality in Windows 10

Your computer’s wallpaper might not be seen often, but it’s still a good idea to make it something awesome. Whether you have a mega-collection of wallpapers from your favorite media or feature a picture you took, the right wallpaper makes your computer more personal. However, no matter your wallpaper, there’s something you can do to improve its quality. Did you know that Windows 10 compresses all wallpaper images to improve performance? Those on low-end machines benefit from this, but if you’re rocking a powerful rig, you might want to make your wallpapers display at full clarity. To change this, open up the Registry editor by typing regedit into the Start Menu. Remember that making Registry changes can be dangerous, so be careful while you’re in here. Navigate down to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop Once here, right-click on the right side of the window and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value . Name it JPEGImportQuality . Next, double-click this new value an

How to Make the Recycle Bin Empty Itself Every So Often

Image
Unless you use the Shift + Delete to bypass the Recycle Bin every time you delete a file, you’re always going to end up with a bunch of trash that needs to be taken out once the Bin becomes too full. But using Task Scheduler, you’ll never have to do this by hand again. Start by opening the Start Menu, searching for Task Scheduler, and launching it. Once you have the Task Scheduler open: Click Create Basic Task on the right. Name it Recycle Bin Cleanup . Enter a description if you wish. Select a frequency. Monthly or Weekly are probably the best options — you don’t want it to be too frequent. Select the starting date and the day of the week on which you want the task to repeat. When prompted for an action, select Start a program . Under Program/Script, enter cmd.exe and under Add Arguments, enter /c “echo Y|PowerShell.exe -NoProfile -Command Clear-RecycleBin” Click Finish. That’s all. Starting now, your Recycle Bin will clear itself on the date that you set an

FAQ about Wise Auto Shutdown

What are the difference between Shutdown and Power Off? The current power supply of mainframe is ATX. Instead of being completely cut off when turning off PC, ATX keeps a faint current on, which has been used as stand-by power model. By stand-by power, not only the PC's operation system could manipulate the power supply of computer, but also users could do that by software control. What’s more, it also makes power supply managed by networking possible. A remote control signal would be sent to PC’s modem and the monitor circuit would activate the power by 5 v to turn pc on. This is how to realize remote control. If the motherboard supports keyboard switch, users could also turn on PC by key pads. All above functions requires keeping the power board on. What are the difference between Sleep and Hibernate? How to Clear the Recent Documents List When You Exit Windows

Image
If you have a Windows Home edition, you will have to edit the Windows Registry to make these changes. You can also do it this way if you have Windows Pro or Enterprise, but feel more comfortable working in the Registry than Group Policy Editor. (If you have Pro or Enterprise, though, we recommend using the easier Group Policy Editor, as described in the next section.) Standard warning: Registry Editor is a powerful tool and misusing it can render your system unstable or even inoperable. This is a pretty simple hack and as long as you stick to the instructions, you shouldn’t have any problems. That said, if you’ve never worked with it before, consider reading about how to use the Registry Editor before you get started. And definitely back up the Registry (and your computer!) before making changes. To get started, open the Registry Editor by hitting Start and typing “regedit.” Press Enter to open Registry Editor and give it permission to make changes to your PC. In the Regi

What is debugging?

Debugging, in computer programming and engineering, is a multistep process that involves identifying a problem, isolating the source of the problem, and then either correcting the problem or determining a way to work around it. The final step of debugging is to test the correction or workaround and make sure it works. In software development, debugging involves locating and correcting code errors in a computer program. Debugging is part of the software testing process and is an integral part of the entire software development lifecycle. The debugging process starts as soon as code is written and continues in successive stages as code is combined with other units of programming to form a software product.
