How to Prevent a Windows PC From Going to Sleep

Image
The sleep function in Windows 10 is useful. It’ll save you money on your electricity bill, help extend the life of your screen and hard drive, and prevent you from accidentally leaving your machine running for hours if you get distracted. That said, it can also be annoying. I’m sure there have been occasions when you wish your computer hadn’t gone to sleep — perhaps you were downloading a large file or performing system maintenance tasks. If you don’t want your computer to go to sleep automatically, Windows 10 makes it easy to turn the feature off. Sleep vs. Hibernation Before getting into the nitty gritty, let’s take a moment to understand what sleep mode is, which is often confused with hibernation mode. Unlike hibernation mode, sleep mode will continue to draw a minimal amount of power. When it activates, all processes on the computer are effectively paused. Windows will store anything you have open in RAM. A press of any key will let you get back to your work in a ...

What’s the Best Way to Back Up My Computer?

There are many ways to back up your data, from using an external drive to backing up those files on a remote server over the Internet. Here are the strengths and weaknesses of each: Back Up to an External Drive : If you have an external USB hard drive, you can just back up to that drive using your computer’s built-in backup features. On Windows 10 and 8, use File History. On Windows 7, use Windows Backup. On Macs, use Time Machine. Occasionally connect the drive to the computer and use the backup tool, or leave it plugged in whenever your home and it’ll back up automatically.  Pros : Backing up is cheap and fast.  Cons : If your house gets robbed or catches on fire, your backup can be lost along with your computer, which is very bad. Back Up Over the Internet : If you want to ensure your files stay safe, you can back them up to the internet with a service like BackBlaze. BackBlaze is the well-known online backup service we like ...

How to Fix Your PC in Safe Mode

After starting Windows in Safe Mode, you can perform most of the regular system maintenance and troubleshooting tasks to fix your computer: Scan for Malware : Use your antivirus application to scan for malware and remove it in Safe Mode. Malware that may be impossible to remove in normal mode—because it’s running in the background and interfering with the antivirus—may be removable in Safe Mode. If you don’t have an antivirus installed, you should be able to download and install one in Safe Mode. Of course, if you’re using Windows Defender in Windows 10, you might be better off performing an offline malware scan. Run System Restore : If your computer was recently working fine but it’s now unstable, you can use System Restore to restore its system state to the earlier, known-good configuration. Assuming your computer is unstable and crashing, it may be possible to run System Restore without crashing from Safe Mode. Uninstall Recently Installed So...

How to Clear Windows Update Cache

The update cache consists of copies of the update installation files. The operating system uses them if you’re ever forced to reapply an update; it saves downloading them again. Although it’s a good idea, they take up a lot of space. Unless you either have a very slow Internet connection or you’re seriously limited with data caps by your ISP, you can safely remove them. Sadly, the process is not particularly straightforward. The first step is stopping the Windows Update service. Search for Services, right-click on the top result, and open it as an administrator. Next, scroll down the list of entries until you find Windows Update. Right-click on it and choose Stop. Now you’ll need to delete the files. Press Windows key + R to open the run box, then type C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ and hit Enter. You can delete everything within the Downloads folder. Lastly, you’ll need to head back to services and re-enable Windows Update.

Is Windows Defender Good Enough?

When you install Windows 10, you’ll have an antivirus program already running. Windows Defender comes built-in to Windows 10, and automatically scans programs you open, downloads new definitions from Windows Update, and provides an interface you can use for in-depth scans. Best of all, it doesn’t slow down your system, and mostly stays out of your way—which we can’t say about most other antivirus programs. For a short while, Microsoft’s antivirus fell behind the others when it came to comparative antivirus software tests—way behind. It was bad enough that we recommended something else, but it’s since bounced back, and now provides very good protection. So in short, yes: Windows Defender is good enough (as long as you couple it with a good anti-malware program, as we mentioned above—more on that in a minute).

How to Back Up and Restore the Windows Registry

Image
A lot of the Windows tweaks we share involve diving into the Registry and changing some values. While it’s great that Windows provides these opportunities, it’s all too easy to accidentally screw up the Registry — and, by extension, your PC. That’s why we’re here to show you how to back up and restore the Windows Registry. It’s smart to do this prior to making any changes. On Windows 7 and newer, begin by typing regedit into the Start Menu. Accept the administrator prompt, then you’ll be in the editor. Next, you need to select the part of the Registry you want to back up. This can be as broad as Computer (backing up the entire Registry) or as specific as one sub-key. Obviously, the larger the scope, the bigger the backed-up file will be. Whichever you choose, right-click the key and choose Export . You’ll get a dialogue box that lets you give the backup a name and choose where to save the file. Click Save and you’ve backed up the Registry. To restore your backu...

How to use Registry Editor

Sure, everyone knows about Registry Editor—but it’s still hidden, with Microsoft not even providing a Start menu shortcut to it. To launch it, you must type “regedit” into the Start menu search or Run dialog box. Many tweaks that you can make using the Local Group Policy Editor have equivalent tweaks that can be made in Registry Editor if you don’t have a Professional or Enterprise edition of Windows. For example, users with the Home edition of Windows can’t prevent specific users from shutting down Windows using group policy—but they can with a few Registry tweaks. In addition, there are all kinds of Registry tweaks that have no equivalent in group policy at all—like customizing the manufacturer support information on your PC. Fair warning, though: Registry Editor is a complex and powerful tool. It’s easy to damage your installation of Windows, or even render Windows inoperable if you’re not careful. If you’ve never worked with the Registry before, conside...

Do I Really Need Antivirus If I Browse Carefully?

An antivirus is only a single layer of security. No antivirus program is perfect, as all the antivirus tests show nothing catches all malware all of the time. if you don’t exercise caution, you may become infected by malware even if you’re using an antivirus (Of course, performing scans with other antivirus programs may help find malware your antivirus suite can’t find.) Be careful about the files you download and run, keep your software updated, uninstall vulnerable software like Java, and more—but don’t drop your antivirus defenses completely just because you’re being careful. A zero-day in your browser, a plugin like Flash, or Windows itself could open the door to infection, and an antivirus is your last layer of protection. Malware isn’t what it used to be—much of it is created by organized crime to capture financial information and other sensitive data. Antivirus software helps you stay ahead of the bad guys by a little bit more, and it’s worth using.
