How to Improve Wallpaper Quality in Windows 10

Your computer’s wallpaper might not be seen often, but it’s still a good idea to make it something awesome. Whether you have a mega-collection of wallpapers from your favorite media or feature a picture you took, the right wallpaper makes your computer more personal.

However, no matter your wallpaper, there’s something you can do to improve its quality. Did you know that Windows 10 compresses all wallpaper images to improve performance? Those on low-end machines benefit from this, but if you’re rocking a powerful rig, you might want to make your wallpapers display at full clarity.

To change this, open up the Registry editor by typing regedit into the Start Menu. Remember that making Registry changes can be dangerous, so be careful while you’re in here. Navigate down to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Once here, right-click on the right side of the window and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it JPEGImportQuality. Next, double-click this new value and set it to the percentage of quality you’d like your wallpaper. The default is 85%, but you can up this to 100% if only the best will do. Once done, click OK, then reboot your computer when convenient to apply the change.
Note that unless you’re using an extremely high-resolution monitor, you probably won’t even notice the default compression. JPEGs at 70% quality are nearly indistinguishable from those at 100%, so there isn’t likely to be a huge difference on your wallpapers. However, it’s worth a try if you’d like to see the difference or have a huge screen.
